BREAKING: LATE PAYMENT CHARGES - IBBULites Raises Alarm, Calls For Management To Withdraw Penalty For Paying Tution Fees Late, Alongside SUG's Interference

The Students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai in Niger State have reacted bitterly against the late registration fee allegedly imposed on them by the school authorities. The aggrieved students are opposing the idea of ₦5,000 payment for late registration as they decried the huge amount required for school fee amongst others.

Tha Management of IBB University Lapai on Thursday, released a memo after holding its 7th Executive Meeting on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023. In a doucment signed by the Academic Secretary of the Institution, Hajiya Amina Y. Ndako stated:

“I write to bring to the notice of all students (fresh and returning), parents and Guardians that the University Management at its 7th Executive Meeting held on Wednesday, 19th April, 2023 resolved that all late registration s will now attract a fee of Five Thousand (₦5,000:00k) naira.

“Similarly, students are advised to hasten all processes of registration for smooth academic activities.

“The University Management wishes you all the best in your academic endeavours.”

The students found the latest development uncomfortable and have called on the President of the Student Union Government, IBBUL Chapter, Comrade Bin Adam to interfere as it'll be a hard tackle on them. They're as well calling on the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abu Kasim to review the decision and withdraw the late registration fees attached.

Speaking to Beli Media via phone call, a source who pleaded anonymity said: “This is unfair and it's a wrong timing. The school fee had just been increased recently and the students are still trying to cope amidst daily life challenges, and they're now imposing a compulsory late registration fee on us.”

“We are calling on the S.U.G to make sure this isn't implemented as it will do more harm than good on the students. The Management should be kind enough by withdrawing the penalty attached.”

Furthermore responding to a question by Beli Media correspondent on if the fees are being used for Capital Projects and major funding in the school. He said; “There is nothing to write home about, our lecture halls are not conducive for learning, Lecturers are always complaining for some of their allowances, most of the Projects in the school are proudly sponsored by TETFund. Why are they now hitting the students so hard in these trying times that we're currently facing in Nigeria? It's totally uncalled for.” he responded angrily.

“The less privileged students are striving so hard, their Parents are doing their possible best, many are orphans and many seek for loans from various bodies in the school to complete their registration, these loans are no longer accessible in the school. How do they want these Children to cope?” he added.

Commenting on the difficulties being experienced by students on the school registration portal while trying to carry out their registrations, he said: “The school registration portal is challenging and frustrating, many have been unable to access the portal and many have not been able to get their receipts even after completing their payments, this is a major challenge the students aren't finding easy.”

The University management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abu Kasim recently increased the school's tution fee in which newly admitted students are asked to pay ₦86,000 and ₦170,000 for indigene and non indigene respectively. A sum considered to be outrageous by the students.

While the returning students pay ₦46,300 and ₦86,300 for indigene and non indigene respectively. Hostel fees for the Institution was also increased recently during the ongoing current Academic Session.

These insensitive hikes are consistent despite the fact that students have several other fees the institution imposes on them. Some of these compulsory fees include: Faculty dues, Department dues, GST dues and many many more.
